Stage 5 of 7 — Controlled Practice
Time: 15 minutes
Source: SB p. 5, Exercise D Understand the Grammar and Exercise E Grammar Practice; TB T5 D–E adapted
Interaction: Individual choice → pair justification → rapid oral pair work
SB 5D — Listen, choose and explain
- Students preview the choices.
- Play the authorized audio.
- Students choose individually, then compare with a partner.
- Pairs explain the event order; they should not merely state a letter.

SB 5E — Choose the form from the time relationship
- Pairs select the verb form.
- They underline the time clue.
- They orally explain why the form fits before recording the answer.
Answer anchor
- I had already seen the Picasso exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum, so I decided to stay home.
- Lorraine had been waiting in the rain outside the stadium for an hour when they canceled the game.
- Ella had been watching TV for two hours when her parents came home.
- She had tried the recipe for cheese bread several times before she served it to friends.
- Zach had already gotten a job as a medical technician when he decided he really wanted to go to medical school.
Finish with rapid oral transformations
Give two actions and one time cue. Partner A makes one accurate sentence; Partner B identifies the event order and changes the cue. Switch roles.
Checking rule
Use pair justification and discuss only disputed or high-value answers. Do not spend time reading every answer serially.
Planned balance: 12 minutes student talk / 1 minute teacher talk / 2 minutes listening and individual choice.
Stage complete when: students select forms from meaning and explain the event order. Continue to Semi-controlled Practice.
